The following is an American Gothic/Twin Peaks crossover written awhile back inspired by discussions on the list. What would happen if Special Agent Dale Cooper showed up in Trinity and met Sheriff Lucas Buck? What conversation might these two law enforcement officials have? Let me amend that, Diane. It is a mansion. At least three stories tall with pillars lining the entryway. From the architectural design, it could be Victorian. Or possibly Gothic. Yes, it's definitely a Gothic type structure. The remarkable thing about the mansion is the yard, Diane. It's filled with gargoyles. Gargoyle statues of all shapes and sizes as far as I can see through the gates. Note: Need to review the history and origin of gargoyles. I wonder what type of person would live in a place like this? "Trinity appears to be a quiet, peaceful town, Diane, but after my experience in that other town I've learned to look beyond the surface. I've already made some unusual observations. Every young boy I've seen has been wearing a striped shirt and the girls seem to prefer the color white. Also, wherever I went, I overhead the townspeople talking about someone named Lucas who had done a favor for them. By the way, Diane, if you need a shovel, I'd suggest purchasing one here. They're low priced and come in all different sizes. It's seems to be a popular item among the townspeople. Just bring your own thermos of coffee, if you do come by. The coffee here..." A knock on the car window. Cooper rolls down the window to find himself looking at a sheriff's star pinned to a vest. "Problem?" Lucas Buck asks. "Not at all. This is a wonderful town you've got here." Lucas glances around. "Yes, it is, and I aim to keep it that way. You know, the beauty of a small town like Trinity is that we always take care of our own." Lucas leans into the window. "Which is why I've got to ask you why you've been parked in front of this house for the last hour talkin' into that tape recorder." "Special Agent Dale Cooper, F.B.I." Cooper flashes his badge. Lucas taps his sheriff's star. "Sheriff Lucas Buck. That's, uh, Buck...with a B." "Pleased to meet you, Sheriff." They shake hands. "You wouldn't happen to know a Sheriff Harry S. Truman, would you? That's Truman...with a T." "No, can't say as I'm acquainted with him. Must not be from around these parts. So what's the F.B.I. want with Trinity?" "Actually, I'm just passing through, Sheriff. I just stopped for some gas and a bite to eat." "Well, I've been watchin' you ever since you arrived, Mr. Special Agent. You and that tape recorder of yours have been in every single coffee shop and restaurant in my town talkin' some nonsense about cherry pie, donuts and a good cup of joe. Folks 'round here are startin' to..." Lucas realizes Cooper is staring at him. "What're you lookin' at?" "I was just noticing that vest you're wearing, Sheriff. I wondered if it came in stripes." "Stripes?" Lucas laughs. "Do I look like Mike Brady to you?" "Exactly when is it that the boys in this town stop wearing striped shirts and start wearing vests?" Lucas frowns at Cooper and observes the thermos sitting on the passenger seat. "I think you'd better cut back on the caffeine, friend." Cooper grabs a notebook from the dashboard. "Where do you buy your clothes, Sheriff?" He pats down his shirt pockets. "I know I have a pen here somewhere." "Pen?" Lucas asks, a grin spreading across his face. "I think I can help you there." He reaches into his pocket. "My deputy loaned me his lucky pen just the other day. Comes in mighty handy, especially for times like these." THE END Copyright 1997
