Disclaimer stuff: The American Gothic characters belong to Gothic Renaissance Pictures and Shaun Cassidy. The Doctor belongs to BBC Worldwide, MCA Universal, and Phil Segal. I'm using them out of love, not out of spite, so don't sue me. :-} Crossover by Jeff Gilson Caleb Temple was digging a hole. His best friend, Boone, was standing next to the hole, but not helping in the digging. They were in Mrs. Sanders' back yard, and Boone, as usual, was wary of Caleb's latest exploit. "Are you sure this is where it is?" Boone asked. "The map says it's right here, five feet down. Now, are you gonna grab your shovel and help, or are ya chicken?" "I ain't afraid, Caleb." "Well, good. I didn't want to have to wack by best friend over the head. Now come on, we've got treasure to find." A few minutes later, Caleb's shovel struck metal. "What was that?" Boone asked. "I don't know. Help me dig it out." The boys used their hands to pull the thing out of the ground. It was a cube about a foot long with handles on three of the sides. It had flashing lights on three of the sides and buttons that looked like they had some sort of use, but neither of them could read the words. "Well, alright. This must be it." "This is the treasure, Caleb?" "Come on. Let's fill in the hole and go back to the boarding house." Back at the boarding house, Boone and Caleb were looking at their treasure. The clock downstairs chimed nine. Caleb was afraid to touch anything on it. They were saved from exploring it when Miss Holt called upstairs, "Caleb, it's time for Boone to go home." "All right," Caleb called back. "You coming back tomorrow, Boone?" "Of course. Don't do anything with it, okay?" "Okay." Caleb and Boone walked downstairs. Boone opened the door to leave, just as a young woman was getting ready to use the door knocker. "Excuse me, ma'am," Boone said as he left. Caleb was still a little surprised at this woman's sudden appearance. "Can I help you?" he finally asked. "Well," she said with a northern accent that reminded him of Dr. Matt, "I'd like to rent a room. Is Miss Holt here?" "Hold on. Miss Holt!" he called. "What is it Caleb?" Loris Holt asked as she walked out to the door. "Miss Holt," the woman said. "I'm sorry about the late hour. I'd like to rent a room." "No problem. Caleb, why don't you take this lady's bags up to the gold room." "Yes, Miss Holt." Caleb grabbed her suitcase and carried it upstairs. "Isn't he a little young to be working?" the woman asked. "I'm his guardian, Miss--" "Temple. Corrin Temple." Caleb dropped the woman's suitcase off at the gold room and then went back to his own. The box he and Boone had found was flashing. He went over to see why it was doing that. He didn't want anyone to find it, so he got a blanket to cover it. His hand slipped as he was placing the blanket over the box and he pressed one of the buttons. It didn't look like it had changed anything, so he finished covering it and left his room. The Doctor was sitting down in his chair reading. The TARDIS had been remarkably trouble-free for the past several months, which meant that his time had been remarkably boring. That wasn't such a bad thing, really. He'd had time to do some minor repairs he'd been putting off for a couple hundred years. It was running better than it had since the Cybermen had shot the console those many decades ago. Of course, without checking his 900 year diary, he couldn't tell how long ago it really was. And the repairs would have gone along easier if he'd had a companion. He'd been alone for so long. He missed them, Nyssa, Sarah Jane, Ace, his granddaughter Susan. All of them had left at one point or another, for different reasons. The only reason he'd gone anywhere recently was to talk. Some of his favorite people were beyond his grasp now because of certain temporal laws even he couldn't get out of. But he could still find many of his favorite minds spread out along the universe. But even this intellectual discussion wasn't what he wanted. He wanted... well, even after this long he wasn't sure what it was he wanted. Maybe if he knew what he wanted, he wouldn't keep going. The console started beeping. The Doctor got up and flipped a few switches. He pulled the viewscreen down to his level and discovered something that shouldn't be there. "What the devil?" he asked to the air. The TARDIS was getting a signal from Earth, 1996. No one in 1996 should be able to find his TARDIS. He reset the controls to land on Earth, within a few kilometers of the source. He stood at the console for a few moments while he waited for the TARDIS to materialize. Lucas Buck stepped out of the Crown Victoria and walked up to the boarding house. He didn't usually make late night trips to the house, but he had a feeling that his presence would be needed. The boarding house had been a sore spot since Judge Halpern had decided to give custody of Caleb to Loris Holt. Well, it was temporary custody, and the term would be coming up soon, and as soon as child welfare took up the case, he'd show what an awful parent any of his competition would make. He'd managed to remove one already. Dr. Matt Crower was out of the way, all tucked away at Juniper House Sanitarium. He was working on Gail Emory, making her either unsuitable or an ally, which ever was more useful. Really, the only possible competition he could have legally was Loris Holt. Which is why he was here tonight. He had been on edge all day. Crower had been at Juniper House for a week, but he had a really bad feeling something was about to happen, and that it was going to start at the boarding house. And if Lucas Buck had learned anything over time, it was to trust his feelings. He walked up and knocked on the door. Loris walked up and answered it. "Well, Lucas Buck. What are you doing here?" "Just making rounds." "Why don't you come in? I just put on a pot of coffee." Lucas walked in, surprised at the sudden congeniality of Miss Holt. "Coffee? At nine-thirty at night?" "I have a new guest who just arrived. We were being sociable." They walked into the kitchen and Lucas took off his jacket. There was a young woman sitting at the table. Lucas smiled, thinking thoughts that he normally reserved for Selena. "Corrin," Loris said, "this is Sherrif Lucas Buck. Lucas, this is Corrin Temple." She had a smug grin on her face that told Lucas something was up. "Temple? Are you related to Caleb?" "Actually," Corrin said, rising to meet the Sherrif, "I'm his cousin. I didn't realize it until Loris and I started going through my family history." "Really?" Lucas pulled up a chair and sat next to her, while Loris went over to the stove to check on the coffee. "I'm Gage Temple's neice. Of course, I knew nothing of this branch of the family until my father died. From what I understand, Gage knew nothing of my father." "Have you met Caleb yet?" "No. Actually, I was led here for a number of reasons. I might not have come at all, except that I also wanted to visit a friend of mine who was living here, but I understand he's moved on, now." "Really? Who's that?" Lucas asked, taking a sip of the strong, black coffee Loris had set in front of him. "Matt Crower." Lucas had to try hard not to spit his coffee across the table. "Dr. Crower?" "Don't worry, Sheriff, I know what he did. It's rather unlike Matt, but from what he's said to me since he came here, this town isn't exactly normal anyway." Matt Crower sat in his cell. He had managed to maintain his self-respect since being sent to Juniper House, keeping himself well groomed and refusing to give in to everyone who said he was crazy. He wasn't crazy, he had just seen the truth and it was a little too much for him to handle. It was nine-thirty, and the lights were going out on his wing. He set down the copy of Nature he was reading and got ready to get into bed. Of course, he was wearing the same uniform that he wore every day, but he mangaged to remind himself every night that were he anywhere else, he'd be getting into sweatpants and crawling into a comfortable bed in the boarding house, or on rounds, or in emergency surgery, or anywhere but in a rock hard bed. He looked at his eyes in the mirror, and they were bloodshot as usual. The reading light in the sanitarium was horrible. He was sure he'd need glasses if this went on too long. He'd only been in for a week and knew that it wouldn't end soon, but he hoped. Behind him he could hear the sound of machinery clanging. It wasn't the usual sound of the water pipes. He turned around in time to see a blue box appear in his cell. It reached the ceiling and was about four feet square around. It looked like an old British Police Box. The door opened, and a young man in a long velvet coat stepped out. Matt sat down on his bed. "Oh, God. I am insane." The man looked around him. "Oh, dear. Excuse me. What sort of cell is this?" "You're at Juniper House Sanitarium. And up until five minutes ago, I was the only sane occupant." "Oh, don't worry, you're not crazy. I'm the Doctor." "Doctor Who?" "Oh, please, don't say that. I hate it when people ask me that. Just the Doctor." "I'm Matt Crower. And, I'm a Doctor." "Hmm.... What, are the inmates running the asylum?" "No, I'm an inmate. Listen, can your...whatever it is get me out of here?" "Where do you want to go?" "Actually, I'd like into town, a couple miles from here." "Very well. I do need to land at another place. It would be very tough to get out of here otherwise. Come on." Matt followed the Doctor into the Police Box. He was immediately surprised by the difference between outside and in. The interior was very post-industrial-gothic. There was a central control panel surrounded by metal girders. Around the outside there were several areas, one with an easy-chair, another with a wall full of drawers, and another with a large aquarium that had no fish in it. The doors shut behind him, large doors with circles carved in them. The Doctor went immediately to the console and started fiddling with a few controls, as a map of the area appeared on the old TV set that was hanging from a chain above the console. "Um, Doctor, why is--" "Why is it bigger on the inside?" "Yeah." "The TARDIS interior is actually in a different dimension from the exterior portal. Most TARDIS's change shape every time they land. Mine got stuck as a 1963 Police Box aeons ago." "Ah." His question wasn't really answered, but he decided to let it go at that. "There, that should do it." There was more grinding machininery and the Doctor opened the door. Matt walked outside, and knew where he was instantly. He was at the boarding house. Ben was shooting pool down at the bar. He was winning, but that was really only because he was playing alone. He played alone often these days. He had lost his will to play with anyone else the last time Selena had appeared at the bar. With any luck, she never would again. "Hey, Deputy, got a match?" He looked to his side and saw Selena standing there with a cigarette in her hand. "Oh, God. Selena, what are you doing here?" "Thought I'd shoot a couple rounds. Don't worry, Ben, I won't beat you. Unless you want me to." She added as an afterthought. She was wearing a light blouse and a short skirt, and thoughts of his one night with her wafted through his head. "Well, alright. Rack 'em. Billy know you play pool?" "I only tell him what I have to." The Doctor followed Dr. Crower up to the house. He was using a scanner he'd thrown together on his way to Earth to track where the signal was coming from, and it was from that house, in the tower. "Doctor, what are you doing?" "Well, I came here to search out a signal I received, and it's coming from the tower of this home." "Caleb's room?" "You know the people in this house?" "I used to live here, until last week. It's a boarding house. Caleb Temple is a ten year old boy who lives in the tower room." "Well, I need to find out what he has that's able to contact my TARDIS. Come on." The Doctor knocked on the front door. Inside, he heard a woman's voice say, "My, my, my, it's busy here tonight." The door opened, and she said, "Hello, may I help you?" "Good evening. I'm the Doctor and I am looking for something that's in your house. May I come in?" "Hello, Loris," Matt said from behind the Doctor. "Matt?" "It's really me. I think I'd believe him. He just took me out of Juniper House in his Police Box." "Right. Come in. Matt, Lucas Buck is here. Go up to your room quickly." Matt did as he was told. The Doctor followed Loris inside. "So," she asked, in idle chit-chat, "you're a Doctor?" "Of sorts. I'm a traveling time expert. Are these African remembrance masks?" "Yes, they are," Loris responded, not at all surprised by the sudden non sequitor. "So, what are you looking for?" "Well," the Doctor said, "I'm not really sure. You see, though, that my sensor shows it to be in the tower room." "That's Caleb's room." Lucas and Corrin had come out to the hallway to meet the new arrival. "Caleb. Yes. Can you show me the way?" "What do you want with Caleb?" Lucas asked. "He has something that's messing with my instruments. I just want to know what it is." "Okay," Loris said, after a moment. "Follow me." They walked up the stairs to Caleb's room, Loris in the lead, followed by the Doctor, Corrin, and finally, Lucas. Loris knocked on the door. "Caleb, open up." The door opened, and Caleb stood there in his night shirt, surprised at everyone at his door. The Doctor brushed past him and went right over to the box. He pulled the blanket off and looked at it for a moment. "What is it, Doctor?" Loris asked. "Worse than I feared," the Doctor said. "This box belongs to the Cybermen." +++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: (longish) The AG-Doctor Who X-over, Part 2 Date: 96-06-09 21:48:21 EDT From: jgilson@grace.skidmore.EDU (Rev. "Cybernetic organisms. Part human, mostly machine. Caleb, where did you find this?" "Boone and me found it--" He stopped suddenly, remembering where they found it and knowing that Miss Holt would be upset at what they were doing. "Caleb, if you're worried about getting in trouble, remember one thing--if the Cybermen do what I think they're going to do, you won't ever have a chance to get in trouble again." "Boone and I were in Mrs. Sanders' back yard, followin' this treasure map, and this was the treasure we found." "Well," the Doctor said, "all we can do right now is wait. They most likely know it's been disturbed and will be coming here sooner than they planned. That might be our best hope, that they aren't ready." The Cyberleader stood completely still on the bridge of the Cybership. His Cyberfleet was ready to return to Earth, this time with a foolproof plan. There was no way that his fleet could be defeated this time. "Cyberleader," one of the Cybermen said. "Report." "Cyberleader, our number three landing homer has been discovered and moved." "No matter. They think they can stop us, but they cannot. They will never stop us. We will concentrate our attack there, as that is the place where their best minds are at work. Any report from our operatives there?" "They report nothing out of the ordinary." "Very well. Continue on course. In two days, the Earth will be ours." Gail Emory woke up suddenly. Her dreams recently had been more turbulent than usual. Her dreams of her parents dying had been replaced in the last couple weeks by other dreams, dreams of holocaust and evil. She had just had one in which these things left space ships and just started shooting everyone in sight. She had been taken inside the ship and implanted with something. That was when she woke up. She had a feeling she'd had before, but never as strong. She had the feeling that she might not live much longer. Selena sank the eight ball and collected the stiff twenties from the side of the table. "That's another round to me, Deputy." "Selena, I'm wiped out. I couldn't even afford cab fare home." Ben looked as helpless as he could, kind of like a deer caught in the headlights of an oncoming eighteen-wheeler. Not that either of them minded this little game they'd played before. But for once, she was there at a time when Ben's life wasn't in more than its usual mess. "Well, Ben, you want me to take you home?" She was leading him on. "Will the ride be smooth?" Ben did his best to keep up with her raging innuendo. "Well, now, that depends on how slow we take it. We could make it last all night." Her left hand was tickling up and down Ben's pool cue. She had her right hand on his shoulder, and was practically whispering into his ear. "Selena, the world will call me crazy, and I may well join them tomorrow, but I think I'd just better walk." "If that's the way you want it," Selena said, with a touch of disappointment. "But it could be a very long time until anyone offers you a ride, and it can be a long... lonely... walk." The last three words were whispered in the easy drawl that drove Ben crazy. "Well, maybe just into town..." The Doctor sat down at the kitchen table, taking the seat which Sheriff Buck had recently vacated. Buck was gone now, completely unsure of this situation. "Doctor, would you like something to drink?" Loris asked, continuing to be the hostess. "Tea, thank you." Corrin Temple was seated next to the Doctor. She wanted to say something about Buck, but couldn't because she didn't know how anyone in the room stood on him. She knew from everything that Matt had told her that Buck was evil. She even knew that he was probably Caleb's father. But legally, she was one of two living relatives, both cousins, and the other cousin had already been denied custody. So, it really came down to her. Of course, there was the other very odd thing going on in this town, namely the Doctor. "So," Loris said, to break the silence, "how do you know Matt?" "We were in med-school together. I washed out after a year, but we stayed friends. After his family died, I sponsored him at AA." A loud beep sounded behind them. "What was that?" Corrin asked. "It has to be the homer," the Doctor said. "Could you help me with it?" Corrin helped the Doctor take the box from the hallway into the kitchen. They set it down on the table and the Doctor began looking over the three sides of instrumentation. "Hmm.... This isn't like any Cyberman Technology I've seen. It must be very new. And that's troubling." "Why, Doctor?" Loris asked. "Because one hundred of your years ago, I destroyed the Cyberfleet. Unless it wasn't the only Cyberfleet. This is 1996, right?" "Yeah," Corrin offered. "Alright. Mondas didn't come perilously close to destroying Earth eight years ago, did it?" "Mondas?" Corrin asked, a bit confused. "I guess not. The first time I encountered the Cybermen, they were on their home planet of Mondas, a twin of Earth which had been sent on a wild orbit for hundreds of thousands of years. It was coming back in line withEarth around 1988, but was destroyed when it took too much energy from Earth. But since that obviously didn't happen, something else did. "Originally, after Mondas was destroyed, many escaped to Telos. The fleet I destroyed was Telosian. But if Mondas didn't come into close contact with Earth, it might not have been destroyed. Which means that this fleet might be from Mondas." "Doctor," Corrin said after a minute. "I hope you're thinking out loud and not trying to explain things to us. I don't know about Loris, but I'm lost." "I understand," Loris said. "If something happened maybe ten thousand years ago, a catastrophic celestial event like a supernova that didn't happen in another time-line, it could have pushed Mondas out of it's elliptical orbit and sent it on an even wilder one." "In this case, though," the Doctor said, "it's probably more likely that a swift moving black hole altered its course. But that's all academic now. We're dealing with a fleet of Cybermen that may be totally different than anything I've encountered before. I have to open this up." "What?" Corrin said, expressing disbelief. The Doctor pulled his Sonic Screwdriver from his pocket and started attacking the bolts. "I need to open it, Corrin. If I don't, I'll never understand it. If I don't have some idea of what's coming, I'll never be able to stop them, and everyone on this planet will be either dead or enslaved within the next week. I don't have time to argue." "Fine." "Corrin, don't be dejected. I'm a little testy right now just because I'm utterly confused." The last bolt came free and the Doctor lifted the cover plate from the box. Inside was a mass of circuitry. The Doctor fished inside his coat and handed Corrin a large shield, sort of delta shaped. "What's this for?" "Corrin, I'd like you to go out to the Police Box on the lawn. It's my TARDIS, my ship. Go inside and find the leather tool case. It should be under the main console." Corrin scowled, but did as he asked. She was really getting annoyed with the Doctor. She'd come here to delve into why her friend had gone insane, and instead was running errands for a time traveling Englishman from another planet who wore a lovely velvet coat. She put the key into the hidden lock and felt the door open. She noticed that the Police Box was humming, very faintly. If it hadn't been a still Southern night, she might not have even noticed. She pushed the door open. Caleb was still awake. Things were all a little weird, well, weirder than normal. His room brightened, and the presence he was accustomed to seeing then appeared. "Hi, Merly." "Hi, Caleb. Well, it seems you've had an interesting night." "What's goin' on, Merly?" "Trust the Doctor. I can feel the good in him." "Merly, nothin' is right anymore. Dr. Matt's in the loony bin. Gail is totally confused, and I can't help her." "You have more family than you think, Caleb. Even if they aren't really related." "What do you mean?" "The woman from down stairs. She's our cousin. She knows what Lucas has done around here. Come with me." Merly walked out of the room through the door. Caleb followed her downstairs into the main hallway of the second floor. Merly walked through Dr. Matt's door. Caleb stopped for a second. Why would Merly be leading him into Dr. Matt's room? He finally opened the door a crack and heard someone inside jump with fright. He looked inside, and there was Dr. Matt. "Matt!" "Caleb." "How'd you get free?" "I found a good Doctor. Hey, Caleb, shouldn't you be in bed?" "Cain't sleep. This place got exciting all of a sudden." Caleb had come in by this point and shut the door. "Have a seat, Caleb." There was a knock at the door. "Matt, it's Loris." "Come in." Loris walked in and hugged Matt. Then she noticed that Caleb was in the room. "Caleb, go to bed. I know we've had an exciting night, but you still need to go to sleep so we can help out tomorrow." "All right, Miss Holt. G'night, Dr. Matt." "Good night, Caleb." When Caleb was out of the room, Matt grabbed Loris and kissed her. "Matt, what was that for?" "I've wanted to do that for a while. I don't know how long I'll be out." "Matt, we have a new tenant. Her name is Corrin Temple." "Corrin? Here? Dammit. I knew I never should have told her about this place." "Matt, her father died a month ago. In his will, he stated that he had a brother, one Gage Temple." "What? You mean she's Caleb's cousin?" "Small world." "It is a small world, Cyberleader, but it is rich in biological and mineral resources. This is why we think you should colonize here." "Thank you," the Cyberleader said into the com system. "Operative 0DY551US, you have done well. When we invade Earth, we will fully convert you and you will become my aide de camp." "Thank you, Cyberleader. I have to close the channel. My Earth employer is coming." ++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: (longish) The AG-Doctor Who X-over, Part 3 Date: 96-07-02 02:08:00 EDT From: jgilson@grace.skidmore.EDU (Rev. Free Radical) Sender: owner-ag-fanfic@stargame.org To: ag-fanfic@stargame.org Here's part three of however many it becomes. Crossover, part 3 by Jeff Gilson Lucas Buck drove into the parking lot across from his office. He thought he might get some thinking done if he went back into his own space. Something about the boarding house always set him off and affected his thinking. Maybe it was that holy ground thing, but more likely it was Loris Holt. But now, that was the least of his worries. He had aliens about to land in Trinity, and he had to get on top of it. If, that is, he could believe this Doctor fellow. He had a feeling that an old duel was about to be fought on his turf. Well, he wasn't going to stand for that. He unlocked the door and walked inside the Sheriff's department. He thought he heard something, but no one was there. He closed his eyes for a moment to search the area, feeling his earth, but getting nothing. The only thing he could detect was the old, faint musk of Floyd's aftershave, unoppressive after all that time. He walked into his office and sat down at his desk. He picked up a stone from his desk and brought it to his lips. He heard a car drive by and checked his watch. It was midnight. He had to know about the weaknesses of these Cyberwhatevers. He had to find something that mattered more to them than anything. He needed to know their Achilles heel. And he had a sneaking suspicion that they didn't have one, at least not of the type he could exploit. Corrin stepped through the threshold of the TARDIS and into complete disbelief. The inside was more than twenty times the size of the outside, and there was a door leading to another room. She found what had to be the console, a six-sided table with all sorts of low-tech looking knobs and dials. She found the tool box and left the TARDIS, not wanting to believe what she saw. It was totally wrong in her mind that it could be. Everything was wrong. Especially the Doctor. He was completely incongruous. He didn't even look like he tried to fit in with anyone else. But that seemed to fit him. She didn't get it. Usually, her friends were people who were as deeply troubled as she was. People like Matt. But here was a man who was completely sure of himself, even if he didn't know what he could do to help them, and he was totally... himself. Not everyone can have that said about them. And she couldn't help thinking what it would be like to travel with him. But she pushed that thought away and walked back up toward the house. Morning came over Trinity like a fireball from the east. It was a beautiful day, as usual. There wasn't a cloud in the sky as it swiftly turned deep blue. Matt opened his eyes, and had to remind himself that he was actually free. He got up and went downstairs to the kitchen to see if he could scrape together some breakfast. The Doctor was sitting at the kitchen table with all sorts of circuitry and wiring spread out on the table. He didn't notice Matt as he walked over to the fridge to get some orange juice. In fact, he didn't notice Matt at all until he sat down next to the Doctor. "Oh, good morning." "Have you been up all night?" "Yes I have. I think I'm understanding something about these Cybermen." "Doctor, Loris told me what's going on. I assume this is the box Caleb found?" "Yes, yes. I think there's a way we can stop these Cybermen." "You've faced Cybermen before, haven't you? At least, that's what Loris says." "Yes, but those were from a different time line. I haven't been the only Time Lord to take a TARDIS and go joyriding for a thousand years. The Cybermen I knew had a weakness in gold dust. It would clog their respiratory systems. But that might not work on these Cybermen." "What will?" "I'm not sure. The first time I faced Cybermen, they were predecessors of these Cybermen. They had a weakness when it came to radiation. Their bodies would stop working when they came in contact with radiation. But they've probably worked that out of their systems. So now we're back to the drawing board." "They're mostly machine?" "Yes, and not just in body. Their minds are very mechanical. They have no sense of remorse, but a keen sense of duty. They'll die before they disobey their Cyberleader. And they'll die if they disobey their Cyberleader. All punishments are capital. They are extremely brutal. They've tried many times to invade Earth, but have always been turned back. It's been their inherent weaknesses that have always been their downfall, but this time around, I'm really in the wrong place at the wrong time." "How do you mean?" "Often I deal with national or international leaders who can order the use of big weapons or other items that help. I don't like using weapons, but it's hard not to with the Cybermen. It's nearly impossible to reason with them." "We're in a lot of trouble, aren't we?" Matt asked after a few moments. Harrison Tate wandered down the maximum security wing of Juniper House. He was the morning security guard, and he had just begun his shift. He peered into all of the windows. He was looking forward to the last window, his favorite inmate. Matt Crower was an intelligent man, someone he could talk to. He did anything he could to help Matt out. He was the one that got his magazine subscriptions into the asylum. He looked into the last window. "Good morning, Ma--oh, God." "What do you mean he's not in his cell?" "Sheriff, I looked this morning at the start of my shift, and he's not there. He must have gotten out during the night." "Harrison, how could he have gotten out during the night? The door is locked, ain't it?" "Yes, of course it is. I checked that first. None of the other inmates know anything about it. He's just gone." "Harrison, I believe you. Don't go losing your own mind over this. I'll handle it." "Thank you, Lucas." "Don't thank me yet." Corrin walked downstairs to see if there was any breakfast, Doctor, or Cyberman box. She wasn't sure she believed everything that had gone on the night before. She certainly didn't believe that ship. Bigger on the inside than out? Must have been a delusion. One thing she was sure of, her life wouldn't be the same again. The kitchen was more of a mess than it had been when she finally went to bed at two. The Doctor had the box torn to pieces all over the table. And sitting next to him was Matt. "Matt!" "Corrin, hi." "What are you doing here?" "Didn't Loris tell you? The Doctor sprung me last night." Corrin walked over and kissed Matt. "I didn't think I'd even get to see you at the asylum." "I didn't think I'd get out of there. If it wasn't for the Doctor, I would still be there. Now, though, I think I'd like to be back inside and ignorant of all this." "You think we're not going to make it through this, don't you?" "The Doctor doesn't exactly sound encouraged. There's got to be something we can do, but what it is, I have no idea." "One thing you could do," the Doctor said, not looking up from the box, "is find all the gold dust you can. On the off chance they're still vulnerable." "Cyberleader, we are ready to descend. We have targeted an area on the east side of this continent, where our agent indicated. There is a small town nearby, also as our agent indicated. They should be very easily subdued." "Very good. Prepare descent. And prepare chambers for new soldiers." The Cyberleader stood, impassive as always, and completely in command. "Contact operative 0DY551US and inform him we are here." Gail Emory stepped out of her Mustang and onto the sidewalk outside the Fulton County Hospital. She wanted to see if there was something that could be done about her dreams. She hadn't gotten much sleep last night, or for the past several nights, actually. She wished her "gift" was gone. It hadn't appeared until she was ten, after her parents' deaths, and for the last twenty years had been nothing but a curse. It led her here, and had ended her career as a reporter because of that. She'd been fired the month before, and even though she was still trying to work free lance, she was living off her parent's money and she hated it. She knew she had to get out of Trinity if she was going to survive. But she didn't really want to leave. Between the two pulling forces of Caleb and Lucas, she was trapped. As she walked into the hospital, Lucas's deputy, Floyd, was walking out. He grabbed her arm. "Hey, let go." "Sorry, Miss Emory, but I've got my orders." "What, am I under arrest?" "I'm not working for Lucas, Ma'am. Not anymore." Dr. Billy Peale was looking out the window of the office he was using during his stay, a stay that was getting longer every moment he was there. The more he knew, the more he wanted to know. Questions kept coming to him, wondering who this Lucas Buck was. What was his hold over the town? And why was his deputy taking Gail Emory away in a squad car? He ran out of his office, but by the time he got to the front of the hospital, they were speeding down the road. He ran to Gail's Mustang and jumped in. The keys weren't in it, so he hotwired the car and sped down the road after them. Caleb, Loris, Matt, Corrin, and the Doctor were all in the kitchen now. It was nine a.m., and none of them had eaten breakfast yet. Of course, there wasn't much room in the kitchen to make breakfast. The Doctor was still tearing the box to pieces, with parts of it all over the kitchen. "Doctor, would it be possible for us to use the kitchen?" Loris asked finally. "What? Oh, yes, sorry. I'll move all of this. I think I've discovered some useful things, actually." "Like what?" "Like--" The Doctor was interrupted by a sudden beep by one of the pieces of box. He ran over to the stove to see what it was. "Oh no." "What?" Corrin asked. "They're here." Billy was right on their tail, feeling his adrenaline rush. He didn't know Gail all that well, but knew that she was doing her best to undermine Buck. And he figured that that was why she was being taken now, to be dealt with. But then, there was also that nagging suspicion that Gail wasn't as anti-Buck as he thought. When Buck brought her in during the epidemic he was supposed to be there solving, they both looked rather disheveled, like, well, like sex, actually. But he knew that there was something of a miscarriage of justice going on right now, and he needed to catch Buck in the act. The squad car was pulling off into the woods, so Billy followed them. He could only hope that the Deputy hadn't seen him. They drove for another five minutes before coming to a clear in the woods. What Billy saw was much more than he wanted to. "You mean they're here?" Corrin said. "That's usually what 'They're here,' means, Corrin," the Doctor said without a trace of irritation. "I'd advise all of you to leave here, but it won't do you much good. Why they've chosen Trinity, I can't say, but they're most likely just beginning. I'm almost finished setting up a communication device so that we can hear their transmissions. That will allow us to figure out what they're doing." "Any way I can help?" All heads turned to Lucas Buck who just appeared in the room. "Ah, Sheriff Buck," the Doctor said, not surprised in the least at his sudden appearance, "What kind of weaponry does this county have?" "Standard firearms, shotguns, pistols, rifles." "All right, how about anything at all that is unusual about your county that we could use as a weapon?" "Doctor, are you naturally this violent?" "No, in fact, usually I try to reason my way out of situations. But the Cybermen don't take too well to reason. Even less so, rhyme." "Well, we haven't much time. They landed when?" "Around 9:10. We'll be lucky to stay alive." "Doctor, something here doesn't jive," Corrin said. "Loris, coffee would be good," Matt said, watching the main event. "You know, I think we should. Anyone else want some?" "I just started chewing some gum," Caleb said. "Could everyone be quiet?" the Doctor asked. "Loris, coffee sounds wonderful. And this morning, I'll take it black. Now, Corrin, what were you saying?" "Why would they choose Trinity? It's a nothing town in a nothing state. No offense, but don't you think they'd choose Washington, DC, or New York, or LA or somewhere where it would hurt more? Or even London or Paris or Moscow. Stockholm would shut the world's money down. Trinity is like a mosquito bite." "Of course, why didn't I think of that before?" "What, Doctor?" Mat said. "They're attacking small because they're small." ++++++++++++++++++++ Subj: (longish) NEW:The AG-Doctor Who X-over, Part 4 Date: 96-07-22 17:18:45 EDT From: jgilson@grace.skidmore.EDU (Rev. Free Radical) Sender: owner-ag-fanfic@stargame.org To: ag-fanfic@stargame.org Crossover, part 4 by Jeff Gilson Ben lumbered into the Sheriff's department and took his place behind the counter. He looked around him. Lucas wasn't around, but that was normal. Floyd wasn't there, though, and that was strange. Floyd was never late. In fact, aside from being a total nitwit, he was the perfect employee. Ben wasn't going to worry about it too much, though. He was still glowing from the night before. And in a little pain, but that wasn't Selena's fault. His head shouldn't have been that close to the headboard anyway. "Amy," Ben asked eventually of the brunette secretary, "did Deputy Floyd call in sick today?" "No, Ben. He came in for a few minutes and then left in a squad car." "Ah, Hell." Floyd pushed Gail forward, toward the grey ship in front of them. A ramp lowered from the underside and out walked two men in silver suits. They were carrying what looked to Billy like ray guns from a cheap 1950's sci-fi flick. They had handles or tubes or something like that on the sides of their heads. They took Gail inside, and Floyd returned to the squad car. Billy ran back to Gail's car and drove back to town. He had to let someone know what was going on. He had to tell them something. But who would believe him? He stood a good chance of being locked up like Dr. Crower if he told the wrong person. He certainly couldn't tell the Sheriff. He didn't know where he was going, but the car found it's way to the boarding house. On the lawn there was a blue structure that hadn't been there before. It seemed to be a police call box from England, though what one was doing on a lawn in South Carolina he couldn't guess. He pulled the car into the driveway and shut it off. He walked up the porch and knocked on the door. "Amy," Ben asked, trying to figure what was going on, "do you know where the Sheriff is?" "He mentioned something about the boarding house." "Thanks. I'll call over there." The phone rang and Loris picked it up. "Hello?... Oh, yes, Deputy, here he is. Sheriff, it's Ben Healy." Lucas took the receiver from Loris. "Yeah, Ben. Really? All right, you stay put, Ben, in case he shows up there." He hung up the phone. "Ben says that one of my Deputies, Floyd, has taken a squad car and can't be found. Any chance this is connected to your Cyberfellers?" The Doctor was about to answer when a knock came at the front door. Loris went out to answer it. "Come in, Dr. Peale," she said. Billy walked in to the kitchen, looked around the room at the various people and items, and shook his head. "All right, I knew this town was a bit strange when I came here, but what is going on here? I watch one of your Deputies," he said, pointing at Lucas, "take Gail Emory from the steps of the hospital into the woods and onto this ship that looks like some bad 1950's sci-fi flick, and now I come here to find someone who'll believe me, and there are two people I've never met, Matt who's supposed to be at Juniper House, and the Sheriff all in one room surrounded by a mess of circuitry--" "Doctor," Lucas says. "Yes," the Doctor, Matt, and Billy say at once. "I mean Billy. Now, you say you know where this ship is?" "Do you know who it is?" "Yes, Billy, is it?" Billy nodded to the Doctor. "Yes, anyway, these people are the Cybermen. I've faced them before, but I'm not sure we can beat them. Now, you say you only saw one ship?" "I think so." "Did you see the occupants?" "I saw these two people who were wearing these silver suits and carrying what seemed to be ray guns." "Grey guns?" Buck asked. "Ray guns." "Energy weapons," the Doctor said. "Well, all energy weapons have energy sources. I think if we can destroy their energy source, we can render them incapacitated." "Great, um..." "I'm the Doctor. Actually, it seems I'm one of three at the moment, but that is my name." "Well, Doctor, how do we do that?" "What about my cousin?" Caleb asked. "Cousin?" the Doctor asked. "Miss Emory is Caleb's cousin," Buck volunteered. "Yes, I haven't forgotten, Caleb. We'll see what we can do for Miss Emory. For now, all of you stay here. Except for Billy and Corrin. You two come with me." "Why them?" Lucas asked, insulted. "Because I said so. Go back to your office, Sheriff, and prepare for the press. They usually start attacking soon after the aliens." The Cyberleader looked at the human female in front of him. She was a weakling, but according to operative 0DY551US, she had strategic importance in this place. Influence with the leader of this place. Now it was time to find out what sort of influence. "Prepare her for implantation. Place her in Chamber 1." "What are you doing to me?" she cried out. "Silence. You will be silent until I tell you to talk. Take her." "Dr. Crower," Lucas said, a few minutes after the Doctor left, "aren't you supposed to be in Juniper House?" "I found a good Doctor." "Hmm... I'm sure. You've got ol' Harrison in a bit of a snit up there." "Well, God forbid Harrison get in a snit." "Not God, Matt." "Sheriff," Loris said, being her best hostess, "why don't you do what the Doctor suggested? We can take care of ourselves." "Very well, Miss Holt. If you need anything, don't be afraid to call. Caleb, be careful." Billy shifted Gail's Mustang into fourth gear. The Doctor was in the passenger's seat, and Corrin was in the back seat, leaning forward between the two. The Doctor looked up at the sky, where dark clouds were coming in from the East. "That's odd," he said. "What is?" Corrin asked. "Those clouds. There was no mention of a storm in local forecasts." "You had a chance to watch the Weather Channel?" "The Weather Channel? Oh, yes, late twentieth century cable channel. No, I mean in the TARDIS's logs." "TARDIS?" Billy asked. "It's a long story," Corrin volunteered. "Speaking of which, who are you?" "Corrin Temple, Caleb Temple's cousin from up north." "So it got you, too, huh?" "What did?" "The Bermuda Triangle of Tourism. Trinity has one hell of a reputation as the wrong destination for a vacation." "Well," the Doctor said, "we can only hope that the Bermuda Triangle of Tourism will suck down the Cybermen." "I," Billy said, "am a Doctor with the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta. I came here a few weeks ago because Dr. Crower was battling a plague of some sort that just disappeared after a week. But I haven't left yet. Why? Damned if I know." "Maybe," the Doctor said, "you belong here." Gail was still awake when they started operating on her. The arm of the machine in front of her focused on her neck and clamped on it. She could feel the cutting instrument attack the back of her neck. A disk rolled down the arm and behind her, and she could feel it being inserted. The Mustang carried the three toward the clearing in the woods where the Cybership had landed. Billy shut off the car and put on the emergency brake. They got out and walked toward the ship. The Doctor pulled a piece of equipment from his coat and started to walk around the ship. "Hmmm... This is good... Yes, right..." he said to himself as he walked. "What is it, Doctor?" Billy asked. "I'm almost positive I know where the power supply is, and it's fairly primitive. It should be easy to knock out." "Except for one thing," Corrin said. "Getting inside. Yes, I see your point. Now, since the Cybermen rarely travel in anything other than fleets, there must be more ships. I need to get back inside the TARDIS. Doctor, take us back to the boarding house. You get to the hospital. If things go wrong, we need Ben Casey, not Indiana Jones." "What about Gail?" Billy asked. Almost as a sign, the front ramp of the ship opened and Gail walked down. She wasn't accompanied by anyone. "Gail, over here!" Billy called out. Gail walked calmly down to the Mustang and got in. "What did they do to you?" the Doctor asked. "Nothing," she said evenly. "They're here to help." "Doctor Peale, drive. We're going to the hospital first. Corrin, do you have a cellular telephone by any chance?" "Yes. Here." "Does anyone know the number for either the Sheriff's office or the boarding house?" "The boarding house is 555-1212," Corrin said. "However, you'll need the area code first. I'm not sure what that is." "803," Billy said. The phone rang and Loris picked it up. They were afraid to move the Doctor's mess, so they'd been eating around it. "Hello...yes...oh, my...yes, I'll tell him. Sheriff's office? 555-4666. All right. Thank you, Doctor." "What was that?" Matt asked. "The Doctor found Gail. He says her life is in grave danger. They're taking her to the hospital." "I'll go. I don't trust Billy in an operating room. He's a cowboy." "Well," Caleb said, "I guess we'll go, too. Gail's gonna need us." "Sheriff's office.... Who is this? One moment." Ben called into Lucas's office, "Lucas, there's some Doctor on the line, wants to talk to you. Says it's urgent." "Thank you, Ben, I'll take it. Lucas Buck speaking," Lucas said into the phone. "Sheriff," the Doctor said from the other end of the line, "it's imperative you get everyone into safe shelters. Hospital, High School, whatever you can provide." "What do you think, I can work magic?" Lucas said. "Yes. Now, if you still want to have a town come tomorrow, you'll get your people into shelters." "Hmm... I see your point, Doctor. I take it these Cyberfellers are posing a real threat?" "Sheriff, we have Gail Emory going to the hospital right now, possibly with irreparable damage. Chances are they used her to gather intelligence about the area, and now that they have it, they'll use it. You can count on other landings throughout the area. Sheriff?" "I'm here." "Get going." The Doctor and Corrin led Gail up the steps of the Fulton County Hospital. They were met by Matt at the door to the emergency room. "Doctor," Matt said, "Sheriff Buck just issued a warning telling everyone to get to the High School with a day's clothes." "I know. I told him to. Get this woman into an x-ray booth right now." "What is it?" Billy took over at this point. "She has a fresh wound, well healed, though, on the back of her neck..." The two medical doctors walked off with Gail on a gurney, wheeling her in to be x-rayed. Corrin and the Doctor looked around the ornately decorated lobby, and quickly found Loris and Caleb. The Doctor walked over to Caleb. He held out his closed fists, palms down, in front of Caleb. Caleb looked up at him confused for a moment. "Pick one," the Doctor said. Caleb pointed at one, and the Doctor turned that hand over, revealing a red Jelly Baby. Caleb smiled and hungrily devoured it. "Thank you," he said. "If you want another, just ask." Caleb started to ask, but then looked at Loris questioningly. She indicated silently that he shouldn't, and he backed down. The Doctor took this all in, somewhat amused, and patted Caleb on the shoulder. Caleb looked down and saw another one in his hand, this time a yellow one. He smiled again and ate it. "I think," the Doctor said, "that Corrin and I should get going. We have to get on that ship somehow, and I have an idea. Is there a taxi service in this town?" "No need," Loris said. "I'll take you. Back to the boarding house?" "Yes. I need to get back inside my TARDIS. I can work better from in there. But Caleb should be here, and you should stay with him." "Caleb has spent enough time at this hospital for one reason or another that he can make do without adult supervision while we're gone. Besides, I think he's safer here." "You're probably right. Good, then, come on. Time is an issue." Lucas still felt powerless, and he hated that feeling. Floyd had yet to return to the office, the Doctor was calling the shots, and Ben was getting more contact with Selena than he'd had in a month. And now Gail, carrying what he hoped was his ace in the hole, was in danger. This was not proving to be a good weekend. The only thing he could count on was that Matt would go back to Juniper House. Which was another thing he had to straighten out. Dr. Crower's escape from the institution wasn't Harrison Tate's fault, but Harrison was the only one at Juniper House who actually knew about Matt's disappearance. He'd made sure to only contact the Sheriff, and that meant that he had something to hold over him. A bargaining chip. Though, how long he could bargain, he wasn't sure. These Cybermen were getting him like a chigger up the crotch, and there wasn't a damn thing he could do about them. All he could do is keep the townspeople safe, and so that's what he set himself to. But he'd have to call on Gail later to see how she was doing. The Cyberleader was reading the statistics on the human female's physical condition. She was average height, under-weight, and impregnated. This was most likely what Operative 0DY551US was indicating as to her strategic importance. While they had her under their control, the child, perhaps an important one in the local politics, was a hostage. The humans were operating on her, as he suspected they would. They would find that the implant had already worked itself into the neural net of the female and was quite impossible to remove with any degree of safety. If these humans were anything like the ones written of in the history of Mondas, they would wait. Caleb was sitting alone in the waiting room. Merlyn appeared beside him and sat down next to him. "Hi, Caleb." "Hey, Merly," he replied, somewhat dispirited. "What's wrong?" "Gail's hurt, bad. She needs me...she needs..." "Caleb, don't think that. Don't succumb to those wishes. Every time you do, you get closer to him." "Why, Merly? Why can't I use it for good?" "That's not its place, not that sort of--" "Why?" "Because you're too young, Caleb. Untrained. If Mama were here, she'd have tought you how to use it. I can't teach you." "And Lucas Buck is the only one who can." "Caleb, it's wrong. It's wrong to change things for your own good. That's as evil as anything Lucas Buck has done because its selfish. If it's Gail's time, it's her time. And there's nothing any of us can do about it." Selena crawled out of bed. She turned on the radio to WIX. Dana Russell, the morning DJ, was reading the news. Selena was only half paying attention as she got into the shower. After the shower, she got dressed and sat down with a cup of energy juice and a bagel. Dana came back on the air. "Again, we announce that Fulton County is in danger, authorities have yet to release the nature of the emergency. Sheriff Buck has reccommended that citizens of Fulton County head to their nearest shelters. In Western Trinity, that's the Fulton County Hospital. In Eastern Trinity, head to the Trinity High School. In Goat Town..." Selena set her drink down and went out to her 'vette. She decided she'd pay Billy a visit this morning after all. The Doctor and Corrin were standing in the TARDIS. Loris had refused to come inside, saying she didn't feel safe crossing its threshold. The Doctor had a feeling she was right, and didn't push the issue. "What now, Doctor?" "Well, Corrin, think. You saw that ship. What were your impressions?" As Corrin started to answer, the Doctor began working on some sort of apparatus. "Well, it was large, but only about as big as the Space Shuttle. Maybe a 747 at the largest. Doesn't look like it holds much destructive power." "What about weaponry?" "I didn't look for them." "Think, Corrin. Was there anything that looked like a gun turret, an energy-weapon bank, anything?" "Come to mention it, no. Even the nose of the ship was extremely smooth. Like it was designed for landing in an atmosphere, not for incinerating a planet's crust." "Interesting you should mention that, since I think that's the last thing they want to have happen." "Doctor, what do they want? You've been rather vague about it." "Well, in truth, I don't know. But I can assume that their reason for conquest is the same as it usually is. Mondas has most likely been stripped of its natural resources, and they want Earth's. But more than that, they want to reclaim what they think is rightfully theirs. If they do, it won't be to return to the humanoids they used to be. It will be to raise the humans they find to their level of "perfection" in mechanization." "So their lack of weapons is an expression of this fact." "Ship-bound weapons. They've still got those energy rifles that Billy was talking about." "So, how do we get on board?" Corrin asked after a moment. "With this," he said, indicating the TARDIS. "And then what?" "Well, then we're going to destroy the energy source for this ship." "And what about the rest of the fleet?" "Well, if the fleet's Cyberleader is on this ship, and I assume he is, turning him off will send the fleet into disarray and send them scurrying back to Mondas." "And if he isn't?" "Then it's time to call on the psychic energy of this region." +++++++++++++++++++++++
